Marching Band Tip
Listen and Tune

Electronic tuners are a good way to get your horn in tune on one or two reference notes, but you can't stop there. Even on the finest professional horns, intonation will vary from note to note. The only way to play in tune consistently is to listen and adjust as you play. Developing this skill will improve your overall musicianship, whether you're playing a solo in a scholarship audition or performing with 300 others as a Marching Southerner!
Audition Information
Marching Southerners Hornline Auditions
Auditions for the Southerners hornline will take place in August during band camp. Every section will have its own audition based on a few qualifications:
  1. Playing ability
  2. A willingness to work hard
  3. A great attitude
The Southerners feel that having these qualifications will move the band forward in our quest for success. Our band camp newsletter will be posted on the home page of the website sometime in the beginning of the summer. This newsletter will contain the information necessary for your completion of band camp like times, dates, places, what to brings, etc. The section leaders will send you the music once they have receive it, so be sure to contact them ASAP with your contact information so they can send the music out. In addition to the newsletter, there will be an online registration form that you MUST submit in order to attend band camp. Incoming rookies as well as vets are required to register for Southerners.

For general questions, you can contact the University Bands secretary, Sandy Lynch via email at slynch@jsu.edu or call (256)782-5562. You can also email the 2009 Southerners Head Drum Major, Ryan Murrell at homewoodSTL03@gmail.com

Marching Ballerinas Auditions
An interest meeting is held at the beginning of each year, usually in January, for high school students, JSU students, and transferring students. Auditions are normally four Saturdays in February or March. Girls auditioning for Ballerinas are taught two dances during the first three weeks of clinics and auditions are on the final Saturday. One dance is a traditional style dance which is the traditional high-kick and sharp techniques routine. This is the style that the Ballerinas perform at football games. The other dance is the modern style dance which focuses more on studio type dancing. This style is what the Ballerinas perform at exhibition shows. If you would like to receive class credit for auditioning, you may sign up for the class during the spring semester for a credit hour. Young ladies auditioning are not required to take the class, but may if they wish to receive the credit hour. If you have any further questions, you can email the Ballerina coordinator, Ms. Allison Brown at diamondgirl@cableone.net

Southerners Drumline Auditions
The Southerners Drumline, a former PAS winner, is an elite organization that has a national reputation for excellence. Auditions will be held during May before band camp in August. You may email or call Mr. Clint Gillespie, the Assistant Director of Bands and Percussion Instructor by email cgillesp@jsu.edu of call at (256)782-5630 for complete information about the May camp. If you are unable to make it to the camp, let him know so alternate arrangements can be made.

In preparation of the May audition, Mr. Gillespie will be offering a Wednesday night drum class in the spring semester which is open to anyone, including high school students, who want to learn some of the technical aspects of playing in the drumline. If you live near enough to Jacksonville to make the weekly drive, this is the single best way to improve your chances of making the drumline because you will learn several exercises and techniques used by the Southerners. In the process of getting to know the guys and girls on the drumline, you won’t feel quite as intimidated when auditions come around in May.

Southerners Color Guard Auditions
The Southerners Color Guard is composed of young men and women from various parts of the country. They are an elite group of people selected from our spring auditions held in May of each year. It is an all day event starting promptly at 9am and finishing at 5pm. The audition day starts out with a brief stretch and then quickly moves to our body/movement program. The next part of the audition process involves flag fundamentals, where you are taught flag releases, exercises, and then flag passages. The day concludes with those who are interested in auditioning for the Southerners Weapon Line receiving instruction. After each section, auditionees are divided into groups of 5 or 6 and are evaluated on their level of retention, performance, and attitude.

Band Scholarship Audition Information
Anyone who wishes to audition for a band scholarship will be able to register for it once the link becomes active online. Auditions will be held during the spring semester, so be sure to keep a look out on the website for further information. Scholarships are granted to both music majors and non-music majors, so everyone has a chance to audition.

Woodwind and brass players should prepare a published solo or etude that best demonstrates your performance ability. Everyone will be asked to sight-read and play a couple of scales so all 12 major scales will need to be worked up.

Percussionist should prepare a published solo or etude on snare drum, timpani, and a percussion keyboard instrument as well as sight-reading on each of those three instruments.

The band scholarship may also serve as your audition for admission into the Department of Music. Formal admission into the Department of Music is required if you plan to major in Music or Music Education. Prospective music majors must also complete diagnostic placement exams in basic music theory and piano which may be accomplished on the audition day. For further information on admission into the Department of Music and for information on audition pieces, repertoire and requirements, please visit the JSU music department website at www.music.jsu.edu and click on the scholarships link.

For questions about the band scholarship audition process, please contact Sandy Lynch at the University Bands Office (256) 782 5562. GOOD LUCK! We look forward to hearing you play.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to have a scholarship to attend JSU, march in the Southerners, or be a music major?
No. It'll just cost less if you do.

Do I have to be a music major to march Southerners?
No. We'll take anyone with a good attitude and a willingness to learn.

I can't make it to JSU for the posted audition times! What do I do?
Call the music department as soon as possible, and they'll work it out.

Do I have to be accepted to JSU to march Southerners?
Yes. Insurance requirements mandate that all people in the band are enrolled for the class. You can't enroll for the class if you're not enrolled in the University.

How do I enroll at JSU?
Visit http://www.jsu.edu/depart/undergraduate/undergraduate.html for all the info you'll need. If you have further questions, either talk to your high school guidance counselor or call 1-800-231-5291, ext. 5268 and tell them you need help.

Do I have to be a music major to receive a scholarship?
No you do not. You just must meet the requirements for the scholarship.

If I march Spirit, do I still need to audition for JSU music scholarships?
You should. At least, if you want a JSU scholarship. You'll still need to audition for Southerners too. Spirit and Southerners are both under the umbrella of JSU, but they are two entirely separate ensembles.

I go to Troy State. Can I still march Spirit?
If you can put up with all the JSU people, they can certainly put up with you. Just keep the "Whup Jax State" jokes to a minimum, and don't be surprised to hear shouts of "Whup Troy" from neighboring apartments and passing cars. They're not shouting at you... they just think any "band" they see marching at the Coliseum is the Southerners, and they're doing what comes naturally. The poor things don't know much about corps, but we love 'em anyway.
